Tour wrap-up, NYC in December

Hey there! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Well, our fall Cosmic Irony tour is a wrap. The Electric Trio was a hit! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the wonderful people who came out to a show, hosted us, or picked up the records over the past few weeks. You've got to give it up to my trio-mates Keith Robinson and Matt Brandau for bringing it every night. So happy to be back with Rubina and Jim, but happy to have seen so many sweet people. We had a blast. Let's do it again soon!

We received some nice tour coverage along the way. Courtney Devores previewed our Double Door Inn show for the Charlotte Observer – we had an interesting conversation about my musical journey so far, my move to NYC, and the formation of the Electric Trio. You can read it here. Thank you, Courtney.

Sylvia Pfeiffenberger, one of my fave music journalists, wrote a spot-on review of our Cradle Backroom set:

Really enjoyed Greg Humphreys' limber, soulful, electric power trio last night! The Cradle always welcomes back its young...it was my first time in the Backroom, actually, and what a nice space it is. I enjoyed the generous pour of the lady bartenders and the shiny newness of things. Since moving to NYC, Greg has stepped up his guitar game noticeably, something bass player Matt Brandau confirmed when he was telling us how much he enjoyed being on this gig. Keith Robinson was pocketful on drums.

I'm a sucker for the new video single, "Crosstown," which led the set (I walked in just in time to catch it, whew). The trio had enough juice to cover Hobex favorites and formed a strong setting for his new stuff. The jazz songs in rock format gave me an urban holiday vibe. After a faux farewell and extended second set, Greg closed up shop with "Goodbye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)."

The melancholy pinched, but at least I had Jeanne Jolly McLean standing next to me for the singalong chorus, her lovely harmony in my ear. For a hometown encore, Greg and Ann Humphreys did a sibling duet of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Charlie Dunn." Like that humble bootmaker, Greg's calling card has always been the handcrafted artisanship of his songs; we miss him, but are happy to know he's thriving in a new stage of life.

Thank you, Sylvia.

WHERE CAN I STREAM THE NEW ALBUMS?

Some folks have asked whether the Cosmic Irony EP or Rock at Live Wood LP are streaming on the net. Although they're not on my Reverbnation or Soundcloud pages, both records are streaming on Spotify.
Cosmic Irony is here on Spotify and Rock at Live Wood is here on Spotify.

Another question I often get is, "Which method puts more money in your pocket?" I do make more if you buy the albums on iTunes or pick up CDs at a show, but if you enjoy and share my music on Spotify and buy tickets to my shows, we'll call it even. The new records are on iTunes and Amazon if you'd like to purchase them. For the record, all of my solo acoustic albums are also on Spotify, as is almost all of the HOBEX catalog and Dillon Fence catalog. Enjoy!

"CROSSTOWN" VIDEO

Wanted to thank you all for the amazing response to the music video for "Crosstown" that I made with Mike Collins of Acoustic Films. Over 1500 views in the last few weeks. Please continue to share with folks you think will dig it. Much appreciated.

NYC IN DECEMBER

Hanging close to home in December. The trio is playing a few gigs around the city, though! Playing Saturday, December 13th in DUMBO at 68 Jay St. Bar – 10 pm set. We're back at Rockwood Stage 2 on Monday, December 15th for an 11:30 pm set. Headed up to Harlem on Thursday, December 18th to play a 7:30 pm set at Cafe Latte ll for the Harlem Honkytonk Series, curated by music journalist Greg Tate (seen recently on the HBO documentary "Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown") and music-journalist-turned-recording-artist Kandia Crazy Horse.

Working on some great shows for '15! More soon...

Thanks,
Greg

Cosmic Irony is a studio collaboration between producer / bassist Matt Brandau and me. We've been recording together on-and-off at his Upper West Side studio Chateau Brandau since I've been living in the city. These are our funky creations.

The first tune, "Crosstown", is a song we built around a Brandau bassline, with horns from Memphis saxophonist Art Edmaiston (Lucero, Gregg Allman Band, JJ Grey and MOFRO) and trumpeter Dennis Marion (JJ Grey and MOFRO). On "Cosmic Irony" we take a Latin trip down Existential Lane. "All Because of You" is pure pop and "More Than a Friend" is a downtown love song. Enjoy.

FALL TOUR CONTINUES...

Had a couple of great sets in Austin TX this past weekend. Thank you to the South Austin Moonlighters for having me open at the Cactus Cafe! We had a rocking electric session on Saturday at Strange Brew Loungeside with the Moonlighters' guitarist Phil Hurley and bassist Lonnie Trevino, along with the fantastic drummer Ramy Antoun, whose long resume includes a stretch playing and recording with Seal. Next up is an acoustic show in Portland OR at LaurelThirst Public House on October 12 with my old friend Matt Brown.

You may have noticed that I didn't do a crowdfunding campaign for these releases or for our fall tour. It's not that I'm not facing the same challenges as other artists in the current environment – I am. I'm simply asking you now: in lieu of pledging money to a campaign, please BUY THE ALBUMS and BUY TICKETS! Come see a show. Dates and ticket links are below. Don't forget that you are the reason we are able to continue performing and making music. I appreciate your continued support and I hope to see you this fall.

Thanks,
Greg

ELECTRIC TRIO FALL TOUR!

Hope you've had a lovely summer. The world's a mess these days and it's suitably depressing. Some good news, though: I taught our seven-month-old lil' Jim to clap and he just cut his first couple of teeth. Feeling mighty proud.

Greg Humphreys Electric Trio (bassist Matt Brandau, drummer Keith Robinson and I) are doing an East Coast tour this November in support of two new releases – Cosmic Irony and Rock at Live Wood.

The Cosmic Irony EP consists of some studio tracks that Matt and I have been recording off-and-on since I've been living in NYC. A friend of mine described these tunes, largely sweet love songs, as "AM Gold!" Fans of my poppier material over the years will surely find something to love on this EP.

The Rock at Live Wood LP, from a recent Electric Trio set at Rockwood Music Hall, is alternately thoughtful and blistering. Mixed by Keith Robinson, it features live arrangements of tunes from the Cosmic Irony EP along with some Trio versions of tunes from my solo acoustic LPs and HOBEX LPs. We're pulling it all together. It feels good, sounds great.

I've really enjoyed playing with these guys. I can't wait to get back out on the road and play some music for you again. Please mark down a date and we'll see you there. Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended. Below are the fall dates announced so far. All dates feature the Electric Trio, unless otherwise noted... some special solo sets are scheduled for Austin and Portland.

More soon,
Greg

Summer action.

Hey! Hope you're having a great summer. Rubi and I are up to our necks in baby care, but watching Lil' Jim grow every day has been amazing. In the meantime, I've been making sweet music and collaborating with some fantastic musicians.

My June recording session in ATL with Stax Soul man William Bell (pictured right) went very well. The session was engineered at Wilbe Studios by a super-talented musician named Wizard Jones, who is currently preparing for a tour as the music director for New Edition and most recently was music director for Justin Bieber's live band. It was fascinating to hear Wiz describe how he handles these huge musical productions.

William and I recorded an intimate acoustic version of a song we wrote together called "In a Moment of Weakness." Cannot wait for you to hear it! During some downtime we listened to Sam Cooke's album "Live at the Harlem Square Club," recorded live in Miami in 1963. HIghly recommended listening. Mr. Bell has been very kind and generous to me and I feel very lucky to have the chance to work with such a legendary talent.

Have a few live performances coming up in the next few weeks. Playing guitar for drummer Greg Joseph's organ quartet at Rockwood Music Hall on Saturday June 28 at 3 pm... this set will feature Organist Ben Stivers (Barry Gibb, Greg Allman) and sax player Anna Webber. Expect some serious soul jazz ala Jack McDuff.

Playing with my own Electric Trio (Matt Brandau, Keith Robinson) out on Long Island on Friday, July 11;  we'll be at New Plaza Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, NY, 7 - 10 pm. Free admission! We are also working on new material and fall tourdates for the trio - more news on that end soon.

Also playing guitar for my friends Smokey and the Mirror at the Red Wing Music Festival in Mt. Solon VA on Saturday July 12. Looks like a fun festival and a great line-up. More soon, folks!

Bklyn 6/15, William Bell

Thanks to our NYC folks for coming out to our Rockwood 2 and 68 Jay St. Trio shows at the end of May! If you missed 'em, The Electric Trio will return to Superfine in DUMBO on Sunday, June 15 from 7 to 9 pm. More Summer shows to be announced soon.

WILLIAM BELL

I'm headed to ATL in June for a recording session with legendary Stax Soul man William Bell at his Wilbe studios for his upcoming album! You might remember my mention of our songwriting session together a year or so ago... well, William has already recorded one of our tunes, "I Will Remember Tonight," with his band. He and I will be recording another of our compositions, "In a Moment of Weakness."

What a thrill to work with one of the artchitects of Soul Music and one of my favorite songwriters! Can't wait for you guys to hear these tracks... I got to hear the version of our tune that he cut with his band and I was floored. He is one of the all-time great Soul vocalists.

William is featured in a new documentary on Memphis music called Take Me To The River, which also features Terrence Howard, Mavis Staples, Snoop Dog, Otis Clay, Bobby "Blue" Bland, North Mississippi All-Stars, and Booker T. Jones. Catch it if it comes to your town.
More soon,
Greg

TRIO! Tour Wrap-up, NYC in May

THANK YOU so very much for coming out to our Electric Trio tour in April! Matt Brandau and Keith Robinson killed it on the bass and drums. We really enjoyed ourselves and it was wonderful to see you all. Every show was noticeably different... we were certainly road-tight by the time we closed out the run with a couple of sets at Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival.

We ended up with a couple of nice live recordings from the tour, and we hope to share some highlights with you soon. The photo at right is by our friend, photographer Mike Benson, taken at Shakori before our set in the Cabaret Tent.

Here's a live video of of "Someday I'll Have my Due" and a very positive live review of that Cabaret Tent set from Dan Schram for IndyWeek. Tell your friends about the Electric Trio and let's do it again soon!

MAY AND JUNE – ELECTRIC TRIO SHOWS IN NYC

We're back in the city at the end of May! Playing a 7:30 pm set at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on Tuesday, May 27. We're on the bill with our friends in Cult Classic to celebrate the release of their new EP. They'll hit right after us at 8:30 pm... hope you'll join us.

If you can't make it, we'll be in Brooklyn the following night, Wednesday, May 28 for a 7:30 pm set at 68 Jay Street Bar. The Electric Trio will return to Superfine in DUMBO on Sunday, June 15 for a 7 - 9 pm set.

More soon,
Greg
