Summer action.

Hey! Hope you're having a great summer. Rubi and I are up to our necks in baby care, but watching Lil' Jim grow every day has been amazing. In the meantime, I've been making sweet music and collaborating with some fantastic musicians.

My June recording session in ATL with Stax Soul man William Bell (pictured right) went very well. The session was engineered at Wilbe Studios by a super-talented musician named Wizard Jones, who is currently preparing for a tour as the music director for New Edition and most recently was music director for Justin Bieber's live band. It was fascinating to hear Wiz describe how he handles these huge musical productions.

William and I recorded an intimate acoustic version of a song we wrote together called "In a Moment of Weakness." Cannot wait for you to hear it! During some downtime we listened to Sam Cooke's album "Live at the Harlem Square Club," recorded live in Miami in 1963. HIghly recommended listening. Mr. Bell has been very kind and generous to me and I feel very lucky to have the chance to work with such a legendary talent.

Have a few live performances coming up in the next few weeks. Playing guitar for drummer Greg Joseph's organ quartet at Rockwood Music Hall on Saturday June 28 at 3 pm... this set will feature Organist Ben Stivers (Barry Gibb, Greg Allman) and sax player Anna Webber. Expect some serious soul jazz ala Jack McDuff.

Playing with my own Electric Trio (Matt Brandau, Keith Robinson) out on Long Island on Friday, July 11;  we'll be at New Plaza Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, NY, 7 - 10 pm. Free admission! We are also working on new material and fall tourdates for the trio - more news on that end soon.

Also playing guitar for my friends Smokey and the Mirror at the Red Wing Music Festival in Mt. Solon VA on Saturday July 12. Looks like a fun festival and a great line-up. More soon, folks!

Bklyn 6/15, William Bell

Thanks to our NYC folks for coming out to our Rockwood 2 and 68 Jay St. Trio shows at the end of May! If you missed 'em, The Electric Trio will return to Superfine in DUMBO on Sunday, June 15 from 7 to 9 pm. More Summer shows to be announced soon.

WILLIAM BELL

I'm headed to ATL in June for a recording session with legendary Stax Soul man William Bell at his Wilbe studios for his upcoming album! You might remember my mention of our songwriting session together a year or so ago... well, William has already recorded one of our tunes, "I Will Remember Tonight," with his band. He and I will be recording another of our compositions, "In a Moment of Weakness."

What a thrill to work with one of the artchitects of Soul Music and one of my favorite songwriters! Can't wait for you guys to hear these tracks... I got to hear the version of our tune that he cut with his band and I was floored. He is one of the all-time great Soul vocalists.

William is featured in a new documentary on Memphis music called Take Me To The River, which also features Terrence Howard, Mavis Staples, Snoop Dog, Otis Clay, Bobby "Blue" Bland, North Mississippi All-Stars, and Booker T. Jones. Catch it if it comes to your town.
More soon,
Greg

TRIO! Tour Wrap-up, NYC in May

THANK YOU so very much for coming out to our Electric Trio tour in April! Matt Brandau and Keith Robinson killed it on the bass and drums. We really enjoyed ourselves and it was wonderful to see you all. Every show was noticeably different... we were certainly road-tight by the time we closed out the run with a couple of sets at Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival.

We ended up with a couple of nice live recordings from the tour, and we hope to share some highlights with you soon. The photo at right is by our friend, photographer Mike Benson, taken at Shakori before our set in the Cabaret Tent.

Here's a live video of of "Someday I'll Have my Due" and a very positive live review of that Cabaret Tent set from Dan Schram for IndyWeek. Tell your friends about the Electric Trio and let's do it again soon!

NEW VIDEO, TRIO SPRING TOUR

SNEAK PREVIEW: CHECK OUT THE NEW VIDEO FOR "MORE THAN A FRIEND" HERE.

GREG HUMPHREYS ELECTRIC TRIO SPRING TOUR: THE BACKSTORY

I follow my muse. She calls and I go. That's it. Sometimes it takes me a while to move, but eventually I head in that direction; met a beautiful lady not too long ago and moved to NYC. We now have a baby boy.

Since I've been living in the city, I've been collaborating with an old friend from North Carolina, bassist/producer Matt Brandau. He and his wife Sarah moved here about three years ago. Matt and I played together back in Carrboro in a mostly instrumental side-project of his called Tiny Pyramids, mainly populated by his band members from The Old Ceremony.

One of the first things Matt and I did once I moved here was write a song together called "Crosstown." Check out a preview of the track here on SoundCloud:

It took me a couple of months to finish the lyrics because I wanted to make sure the song evoked a feeling of newly living in New York City and being in love. I've written quite a few songs in that vein this past year.

Matt and I have recorded a few more of these new songs, including "More Than a Friend" featured in the video above. The recordings are sounding decidedly like a combo, so we've decided to take these tunes out for a spin. We recruited Matt's friend Keith Robinson, a seasoned drummer and New Yorker-via-Austin TX who spent years on the road backing up piano queen Marcia Ball and Texas circuit king Charlie Robison. We've been doing some gigs around the city and we're taking it on the road in April. Details, venue and ticket links are here.

Sat 4/12  Cusbah   Washington DC   10:45 pm
Sun 4/13  Pine Lakes Tavern   Myrtle Beach SC
Tue 4/15  Grey Eagle   Asheville NC  Joe Fletcher 8 pm, GH Trio 9 pm, Shivering Timbers 10 pm
Wed 4/16  Bourgie Nights   Wilmington NC   9 pm
Thur 4/17  The Garage   Winston-Salem NC   Brett Harris opens at 8 :30 pm
Fri 4/18  Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival   Silk Hope NC   Cabaret Tent 3:45 pm
Sat 4/19  Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival   Silk Hope NC   Meadow Stage 10:45 am

The New York gigs have been tons of fun – we have one more set at Rockwood 1 at 3 pm on Sunday, April 6. It feels good to be playing electric guitar again. Live, I'm using all the tools in the shed with this combo – Rock 'n' Roll, Funk 'n' Soul, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Americana, Blues. Whatever feels right. We'll be throwing in a few cuts from the catalog too, so hit me with any requests you might have. Please come to a show and please tell your friends... a return visit is much more likely that way. Hope to see you in April.

Doing east coast tourdates this spring with a new electric trio. Joining me will be Matt Brandau on bass guitar, and Keith Robinson on drums. IT'S A BOY! Also, music stuff.

Bumphreys is here!

Meet Jim – James David Humphreys, born in Brooklyn at 11:50 pm on January 22, 2014. Mommy and baby are doing great. We're elated and grateful. And sleep-deprived!

Jim arrived three weeks past his due date, following several days of hard labor for Rubina. What an extremely challenging, yet wonderfully exciting time this has been for our new little family.

Jim is named for our dads, both named James. His middle name is David in honor of our friend David Doernberg. Rubina and I met at Dave's memorial service almost two years ago; it's a fitting tribute to one of our favorite people.

Thank you all for your encouragement and kind words along the way... the adventure begins! We just took Jim out to a restaurant for his first outing, and the Beatles' Revolver was playing. He also shares Sam Cooke's birthday. I take those as good omens.

MUSIC STUFF: LOVE HANGOVER, TRIO GIGS

Laying pretty low the next couple of months to be with the family, but I'm excited about playing a few local gigs. First up, doing a short duo set at Bowery Electric on Saturday, February 15 with my friend Margaret White for the NYC version of the Love Hangover. It'll be a night of great artists singing duets of heartache and heartbreak – expect some fabulous originals and covers. You can buy advance tickets here.

Still chipping away at a new LP with Bassist / Producer Matt Brandau at his Upper West Side studio... really digging what we've done so far, and considering a crowdfunding effort to help make sure this new project cuts through all the (rather well-promoted) clutter out there.

I've also been itching to work some of these new tunes out live with a rhythm section, so Matt and I are doing some trio gigs together with drummer Keith Robinson (Marcia Ball) in February, March, and April. Looking forward to playing electric guitar on some of this new material! Check us out:

– Saturday, February 22 @ Pete's Candy Store, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 5:30 to 7 pm
– Friday, March 7 @ Bowery Electric, East Village, Manhattan, 8 pm
– Sunday, March 9 @ Superfine, DUMBO, Brooklyn, 7 to 9 pm, two sets.

Bringing this trio down to NC in April. We'll be playing a couple of sets at the spring Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival between April 17 and 20. Working on some routing gigs on our way to the festival as well. Look forward to playing some new music for you... hopefully I'll be bringing our new little nuclear unit! See you soon.

Greg

LATEST ALBUM: BOHEMIA.

"...a perennial pleasure, an ever-blooming example of what dedication to one’s art and a fierce resistance to abandoning exposed heart and simple, sincere emotion can produce." – Dennis Cook, Dirty Impound

Available on iTunes. Hard copies available via PayPal and at live shows.

Check out the music video for the song "Across The Ocean, Mama," the third track on BOHEMIA. Buy BOHEMIA on iTunes herePurchase a hard copy via PayPal here. Have a listen online here or here

Bohemia is a 9 song puzzle.  Some tunes are newer; some were written during a couple of summers spent in Prague, CZ and the EU. They fit together just so.

It's about leaving, and arriving.  You could consider it a love letter (or goodbye note) to my home state of North Carolina.  You could also consider this LP a musical warm-up, setting the stage for new adventures in New York City and beyond.

Bohemia features musical turns from very talented guests Matt Brandau, Phil Cook, and Lizzy Ross. There's a song co-written in Nashville, TN (and on Interstate 40) with Lizzy Ross, and a song co-written drunk on a roof in Prague with Montana singer-songwriter Jessica Kilroy

It's of a piece with my previous three solo albums Trunk Songs, Realign Your Mind, and People You May Know; mostly acoustic. Mostly recorded at my studio in Durham NC with help from friends.

25 Years of Music-Making

Hope you had a happy Thanksgivukkah! Rubina and I stayed in Brooklyn... we're hunkering down and getting ready for the birth of our lil' Bumphreys, due in late December. I have added one solo show to the docket for December 14 – an 8 pm set at my fave neighborhood bar here in DUMBO, 68 Jay St. Bar. Please come if you're in town. Would love to see you.

AL KOOPER

Got to visit with legendary musician, producer and songwriter Al Kooper (pictured right) in November. Some of you know Al is a HOBEX fan from way back... he replied to my last newsletter (people actually read these things, who knew?) and let me know he was in town to play organ on some gigs with Ron Wood and Mick Taylor. We had a great hang. Thanks, Al!

HOLIDAY GIFTING

For a special holiday gift, may I suggest a Greg Humphreys CD bundle for your favorite music fan? Visit my store here to purchase CDs directly from me via PayPal. I will be fulfilling these orders myself, and I'd be glad to sign the disc(s) and write a personal note to your giftee, complete with an original cartoon. Running a D.I.Y. operation all the way ovah heah! Of course, all four solo album releases are also available through iTunes and other digital outlets.

2014: TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF MUSIC-MAKING

Thanks again to everyone who came out to one or more of this year's 50 live performances. 2014 will mark my 25th year as a recording and performing artist – Dillon Fence released our self-titled self-released EP in 1989.

I've released over 10 albums' worth of songs and performed well over 2000 times these past 25 years; sometimes it's overwhelming to think about it all. I am forever indebted to the many talented musicians and business people with whom I've been lucky enough to work, as I am indebted to you for your support and encouragement. I'm sorry if I ever let you down.

Special thanks to awesome folks Brad, Val, and Chris at Mongrel Music, who have been booking me over the last ten years, both with HOBEX and as a solo artist.

It's not likely Bohemia will appear on any end-of-year Best-of-2013 lists, but I know in my heart that I am making some of the best music of my 25-year career right now. I also know that those of you who have bought, listened to, and enjoyed my solo releases will vouch for their quality and integrity.

Super-excited for you to hear the tracks I've been working on with Matt Brandau here in NYC. We have half an album's worth of songs completed so far – yet another genre adventure. More soon! The next time you hear from me, there will likely be a lil' Bumphreys in the house.

xo,
Greg
